Jonah McFaddin part 3: The Way It Went
Nothing goes the way it’s supposed to.
- Jonah is already at his locker when the girls spill inside. His locker is the first in a long line, right inside the door. So. Mae’s excellent spying abilities aren’t needed.
- AND, as if that were not enough, NADINE steps forward ready and very willing to distract Jonah. Hannah and Polly look at Nadine. They look at each other. And. No. One. Does. A. Thing.
Except Brian, who walks in and starts talking to Jonah. The two move toward the locker room.
Nadine sighs heavily.
Hannah steps forward, ready and more than a little willing to remind all of the PLAN. How it went wrong. Why it went wrong. How it can be made right again.
The Farmer’s Wife looks this way and that. “Does the plan even matter now? He’s gone. You know where his locker is–just stick the note in.”
All four turn to look at Hannah’s Mother. Mouths open wide in horror. In wonder. How does she know the plan? They glare at Hannah. She shrugs, not knowing any more than they do.
The Farmer’s Wife rolls her eyes. “Seriously? I was in the car. You know. The Driver?”
And still, they stare, wide and silent, having a very hard time getting over themselves. But rest assured, they do, and not a second too soon. Hannah grabs the paper and slides it through the slots just as the boys locker room opens and several boys (including Jonah) walk out and by our four red-faced snickering young ladies.
“He does have nice hair,” the Farmer’s Wife observes loudly.
“MOTHER!” Hannah shrieks and the four scramble towards the gym.
The Farmer’s Wife shrugs and follows quietly behind.
